quick tutorial about post visibility! these are the options you get when you click the world icon at the bottom of a post.
posts are public by default (world).
you can also make posts unlisted (unlocked padlock); please do this for any posts containing nsfw to hide them from local and fedtl so that minors can avoid them! they can still be boosted this way.
followers only posts (locked padlock) can't be boosted!
direct (envelope) is a DM, this is how you start DMs with other users. #faq
visual tutorial on what the CW button does!
CW stands for content warning. you can use this function for lots of things: trigger warnings, spoiler warnings, hiding long posts, nsfw posts, or anything you don't want to immediately show. it works a little like a readmore on tumblr. #faq
visual tutorial on marking images as sensitive!
when you add an image to a post, the eye button will appear at the bottom. you can toggle it back and forth; the blue struck through eye means you've marked your image as sensitive.
any images marked as sensitive will be blacked out and have to be clicked on to show! please use this for any potentially triggering images and anything nsfw along with making posts unlisted when necessary. #faq
you can also caption images directly in the image! this is meant for people who use screen readers; it will also show up as a hover and as a caption on mobile apps for mastodon. #faq
if you need to avoid spoilers, triggers, or just any words or phrases you don't want to see, mastodon has a filtering system!
filtering is its own heading below settings, almost all the way down. it should always show up as "filtering" in any mobile apps you use as well.
on the add new filter screen, you can add words or phrases and choose where you want them to be filtered from. there are also options to remove filters after certain timeframes (ie after you see the movie). #faq
